What kinds of cuts and scars can I claim for?

There are many types of scars and cuts affecting different parts of the body. Facial scars, arm scars and serious finger cuts are all injuries for which we may be able to help you to claim.

Scarring can come in various forms, such as:

  • Fine-line scars: these remain visible but fade somewhat over time, usually not causing long-term discomfort.
  • Keloid scars: these keep growing after the wound has healed. They can be quite painful.
  • Contractures: these are areas where your skin tightens, typically due to a burn.

Types of cut, meanwhile, include:

  • Abrasion: This is caused by your skin rubbing or scraping against a rough surface, such as a road.
  • Puncture: This is a small hole caused by a pointy object. Even if it doesn't bleed much, a it could cause a threat to internal organs.
  • Laceration: This is a deep cut and can be caused by a knife, machine or tool.
  • Avulsion: This is a partial or complete tear of the skin and underlying tissue, typically caused by violence.

What kind of incidents cause cuts and scars?

When speaking to clients, we hear about many different scenarios where they have incurred cuts or scars that were someone else's fault. Examples include:

  • On the road: you may be a car driver, motorcyclist, cyclist or pedestrian - anyone involved in a road traffic accident can suffer from a cut or scar that has serious effects. If the accident was caused by someone else, you may be able to claim.
  • Elsewhere in public: Accidents can happen anywhere in public and, if someone else's negligence was to blame, it might be worth making a claim. Parks, footpaths, shops and supermarkets are just a few examples of public places where you may have been injured.
  • At work: Your employer has a duty of care to make sure that professional operations don't put you in harm's way. Accidents at work still do take place, and cuts and scars can result through no fault of your own.

Claiming for cuts and scars: FAQs

There are some questions that we are commonly asked about claiming compensation for cuts and scars. We've answered a few below to help to inform your decision.

How much compensation do you get for a scar?

There are many different types of scar and levels of severity. We'd need to know more about your particular circumstances to give you a clear estimate.

To get a general ballpark figure of the amount for which you might be eligible, though, feel free to use our accident & personal injury compensation calculator.

Gather as much evidence as you can. You'll need to prove that negligence caused your scar, so photos taken of the scene at the time of the accident, an employer accident report form, CCTV footage, medical notes and details of any witnesses are all good things to share with us.

How much compensation do you get for permanent scarring?

Again, this depends on various factors pertaining to your unique situation. Generally, permanent scarring warrants a higher compensation amount than temporary scarring. The more severe your scars, the more that you're likely to receive if successful.

I cut my finger at work. Can I claim for it?

This depends on the level of damage caused by the cut. If you cut your finger at work and it's had a serious effect on your life, you may have grounds for a claim. For example, cuts that lead to infections, prevent you from working for a period of time, or damage tendons or ligaments are all serious enough for it to be worth looking into making a cut finger claim.

To prove that your employer was negligent and that this led to the finger cut, we'll want to establish if factors such as faulty machinery, any other damaged item, inadequate safety training or a lack of PPE were the cause.

What kinds of facial scarring can I get compensation for?

From minor to very severe facial scarring, anything that was caused by someone else's negligence could form the basis of a facial scar injury claim.

The face is the most displayed part of the body, so naturally a facial scar can be highly distressing. When you make a claim, the psychological damage is taken into account, as is any loss of income, medical costs and travel expenses incurred by trips to the hospital.

Facial scar injuries can result from all manner of negligence-related incidents. These include:

If you don't see the cause of your facial scarring on the list, don't worry! This isn't exhaustive. A conversation with one of our UK-based specialists can help you to ascertain if you might be entitled to facial scar compensation.

Is there a time limit for claiming for my cut or scar?

As with most personal injury claims, you'll have three years to make your claim. If you're making a scar claim, you can expect this to start from either the date of the injury or the date upon which your scars first became noticeable.

If your injury was the result of a criminal offence, you may be subject to a two-year limit and you'll need to make your claim via the CICA scheme.

Certain exceptions to the rule exist, such as when you are unable to claim within three years due to mental incapacitation or whether the claim is on behalf of a child.
